Perhaps the most representative wine in this week’s tasting of the unique breadth of Olmstead’s portfolio, Seigneurs de Peyreviel brings us a little something for everyone in this southwest French red blend. The Cotes de Millau is just about smack dab between Bordeaux and the Rhone Valley, separated both culturally and physically from much of the country’s wine traditions. Constituted of 50% Syrah, 30% Gamay, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Fer Servadou (perhaps France’s most untamed variety), each grape asserts itself at some point in the arc of this wine’s profile, no matter how little is in the blend. We’re offered the inky fruit and peppery spice of Syrah, the juicy appeal and playful lift of Gamay, the hard structure and broad shoulders of Cabernet, and the wild, feral complexity of the Fer. Further, it’s rare that one can taste something so individual at such an inexpensive price.-Needham Fine Wines
